My Musical Culture

Hello everyone, my name is Jacob Jaros. I'm a freshman here at Converse University. My life here has been great so far! I’ve made new friends, seen new places, and learned so many new things. I grew up in Minnesota, so I am really far away from home but despite the distance I really do enjoy it here.. mostly because it's much warmer. I don't know much about classical music but I am familiar with rap, pop and rock n roll because that's what's playing through my earbuds the whole day around campus.

1. An example of something that I like right now:

At the moment I have two songs that I really like. These are “White Wedding” by Billy Idol and “Body Bag” by YUNGBLUD and Machine Gun Kelly. “White Wedding” is a classic rock n roll song that I have heard my whole life. I grew up listening to rock n roll in the car with my dad when he would pick me up from school. He constantly listened to music and almost all of it was rock n roll. I believe this is why I like it so much. I like “Body Bag'' because of its fast pace and electric guitar.

2. An example of music that's important to me.

A song that is important to me is “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons. I remember this was the one song I listened to a bunch in middle school. For some reason I just really liked the song. I remember liking it so much I bought it on apple music at a sleepover so I could show my friend what it sounded like. I wouldn’t necessarily say the song is very important to me, more that the memory is important to my childhood. Another song that reminds me of my childhood is “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas. This was another song I can remember liking a lot more in lower school and middle school. I believe I liked it so much because of the loud bass and the difference in the voices present throughout the song.

3. An example of a music I don't really connect with.

I don't really connect with any country music. It's most likely because I'm from the north and not many people around me listen to it. There is nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't make my ears excited or my body want to dance. I think people always like what they are familiar with and I am just not familiar with country music.

Comments

  1. I also listen to rock music pretty often! I mostly lean towards the more modern stuff but I enjoy classic rock too. I don’t listen to YUNGBLUD often but I do like the songs by him that I have heard. Imagine Dragons is a band that I used to really really love. I haven’t listened to them much recently but they were definitely my favorite when I was in middle school and I got the chance to go to one of their concerts when I was in 8th grade! Like you, I don’t really connect with country music either. I grew up around here and definitely grew up listening to country music and I think I just got a bit tired of it. However, I do enjoy this particular song you shared! If I had to choose any country music to listen to I would probably lean more towards the classic stuff or something like Kacey Musgraves.

  2. I enjoyed listening to "White Wedding" a lot! It reminded me of growing up in my early teens and watching 80s movies with my mom. I am not sure if this song is in a movie but sounds like it would be. I grew up listening to "Radioactive" a lot as well! My neighbor had it on her iPod and anytime I'd go over her house no matter what we were doing this song would always come up. Along with you saying the Black Eyed Peas they were what I wrote for my #2 because my family loved them, so their music was always played when I was younger. Now for country music it also not my first choice but although I live up north as well, in my town country music is pretty big. I enjoy older country though... I've never heard this song but it's very catchy in my opinion and like it!
